Barbecue Judging Class to be held at FAPC

STILLWATER, Okla. – The Oklahoma Food and Agricultural Products Research and Technology Center at Oklahoma State University is hosting a class to teach participants how to judge barbecued meats.

The Certified Barbecue Judging Class, taught by Ed Roith of the Kansas City Barbeque Society, will be held Saturday, March 13, 2004 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Center. This event is co-sponsored by the Oklahoma Beef Council.

“We are excited to be a part of this event and know it will be a great time as well as very educational,” said Michael Kelsey, executive director of OBC.

Not only will the participants learn how to judge barbecued meats, but also they will receive a Certified Judges Manual and a badge, said Chuck Willoughby, Center business planning and marketing associate. This event will prove to be a lot of fun for participants as well as organizers from the Center.

“Barbecue is really big in Oklahoma,” Willoughby said, “and there are a lot of great barbecue sauces in the market including well established Oklahoma brands such as Head Country and newer ones like Pistol Pete’s BBQ Sauce.”

Cost for the event is $35 for KCBS members and $60 for nonmembers. The nonmember fee entitles the participant to a one-year membership in the KCBS.

The Center has worked with more than 30 Oklahoma brands of barbecue sauce – all very good tasting and of high quality, Willoughby said. Many Oklahoma grocers will carry up to 10 or 12 Oklahoma brands outnumbering the national brands on the shelf approximately 4 to 1. These local brands, while typically costing more than the national brands, appeal to local consumers’ tastes and preferences.

“There is a love affair between local brands and the typical grill master or smoke king in Oklahoma,” added Willoughby. “This event should appease everyone’s
appetite for good barbecue as well as teach the fine intricacies of judging barbecued meats.”
