IFT meeting to include distinguished lecturer
STILLWATER, Okla. – The Oklahoma IFT Section will host a dinner meeting Nov. 4 at Meditations in Stillwater, Okla. The meeting will feature Bob Noyes, professor in the Food Science and Nutrition Department at California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo.
Noyes is part of the “distinguished lecturer” series sponsored by the IFT, said Dave Moe, Oklahoma IFT secretary and pilot plant manager for the Food & Agricultural Products Center. His presentation is titled, "Let’s You and I Have a Sensory Experience (with Wine) or a Method to Help You Really Enjoy Your Next Glass of Wine."
“Noyes has been teaching at Cal Poly for the past 27 years,” Moe said. “His wine related efforts include teaching two classes: one on the commercial production of wine and beer and another on the sensory evaluation and enjoyment of wines.”
Noyes is also the advisor to the Cal Poly Vines to Wines Club, an active group of students who are planning careers in the wine industry. He consults in both the food and wine industries and had an eight months sabbatical working with Tim Hanni of Beringer Wine Estates and WineQuest LLC.
The mission of the IFT is to advance the science and technology of food through the exchange of knowledge, said Nurhan Dunford, Oklahoma IFT chair and oil/oilseed chemist for the FAPC.
“IFT currently has 55 regional sections,” Dunford said. “IFT regional sections and divisions are membership groups that share ideas and solutions by keeping the channels of communication open year-round.”
Participation in sections provides benefits, which include experiencing expert speakers at local meetings, participation in program development for the IFT Annual Meeting and the opportunity to contribute through committee involvement.
“Members benefit from education and networking at the local level and develop leadership skills through committee involvement,” Dunford said.
Currently, the Oklahoma section has 126 members who are students and professionals working for industry and academia in Oklahoma. The newly elected IFT Oklahoma Section Executive Committee members took over the duties on Sept 15, 2004.
The committee members include Dunford, chair, Oklahoma State University; Eric Harp, chair-elect, Bama Companies; Moe, secretary, Oklahoma State University; Chuck Willoughby, treasurer, Oklahoma State University; Christina Dewitt, councilor, Oklahoma State University; and Siobhan Reilly, alternate-councilor, FoodProtech.
