FAPC/IFT-OK to host Research Symposium Feb. 22

STILLWATER, Okla. – The Food & Agricultural Products Center and the Institute of Food Technologists- Oklahoma Section are hosting a symposium to highlight food and agricultural products research conducted by the FAPC, as well as Oklahoma State University.

The symposium will be held Feb. 22 in room 201 of the FAPC from 8:30 a.m. to 4:20 p.m. and will feature a combination of oral and poster presentations of research conducted at the FAPC and OSU.

The program will include discussions of current industry advances and presentations of current research on food technology, said Peter Muriana, FAPC food microbiologist and chair of the symposium.

“The event will provide an opportunity for graduate students to make presentations of their work and for scientists and researchers to network with others in the food and agricultural field and possibly foster future collaborations among colleagues,” Muriana said.

A special feature of the symposium is a presentation by keynote speaker Dr. John Park, director of Texas Center for Cooperative Development, Texas Cooperative Extension. The title of his presentation is “Consumer Paradox: Understanding America’s Health-Conscious Obese.”

Following the research symposium, an IFT-OK dinner meeting will be held at the Stillwater Country Club. The dinner meeting will include student awards from the presentations given earlier in the day.

The dinner meeting also will feature Bob Noyes, Distinguished IFT Lecturer and professor in the Food Science and Nutrition Department at California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo.

His presentation is titled, "A Logical Approach to Wine and Food," and will “demystify” the hitherto complex task of paring wine and food.

The symposium is open to anyone who wants to attend. There is no charge for the day’s events; however, the dinner meeting cost is $25 per person or $10 for
students.

The deadline to register for the symposium is Feb. 10, 2006, so register today by filling out the form on the reverse side and sending it in, registering online at www.fapc.biz/researchsymposium.html or calling (405) 744-6071. A complete agenda also may be found at the above Web site.
