IFT president to speak during FAPC Research Symposium

(Stillwater, Okla. – Jan. 25, 2012) The Oklahoma State University Robert M. Kerr Food & Agricultural Products Center, together with the Institute of Food Technologists-Oklahoma section, are sponsoring the 12th annual FAPC/IFT-OK Research Symposium to highlight food and agricultural products research conducted by FAPC and other OSU researchers.

The symposium will be held Feb. 22 in room 201 of the FAPC from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. and will feature oral and poster presentations and a keynote speaker.

“The event will provide an opportunity for graduate students to make presentations of their work and for researchers to network with others in the food and agricultural field and possibly foster future collaborations among colleagues,” said Peter Muriana, FAPC food microbiologist and chair of the symposium.

The keynote speaker, Roger Clemens, chief scientific officer of the Horn Company, will give a presentation titled “The Role of Food Science and Technology in Dietary Guidelines.”

“We are fortunate to have Dr. Clemens as our keynote speaker,” Muriana said. “It is not easy to get the current IFT president to address your organization. He is very knowledgeable in conducting research and translating that research into more healthful food products and educational communications.”

A reception honoring Clemens will be held immediately following his presentation.

Clemens is the founding and current columnist for the monthly Food, Medicine and Health column in Food Technology Magazine and is an associate editor for Journal of Food Science, both published by IFT.

In his capacity at the Horn Company, he is responsible for providing scientific expertise to Horn’s Ingredients and Nutraceutical Divisions.

“We are very excited to have Dr. Clemens talk on important industry related topics,” said Chuck Willoughby, FAPC manager of business and marketing relations. “Food science and technology in dietary guidelines plays an important role in producing products, and that is something we assist clients with here at the FAPC.”

Following lunch, student awards will be presented in both the oral and poster presentation categories. The top student winners of each category will receive a monetary award from IFT-OK.

The symposium is open to anyone who wants to attend. There is no charge for the day’s events; however, registration is required to receive a complimentary lunch ticket and business portfolio.

The registration deadline for the symposium is Feb. 10. You may register online at www.fapc.biz/researchsymposium.html or call Karen Smith, FAPC workshop coordinator, at (405) 744-6277.

Again, this year’s FAPC research symposium is being held in conjunction with OSU Research Week, which runs Feb. 20-24.
